'gardenART' is born in an old power plant

gardenART on King St was a dream and idea on paper, but the discovery of the building at 44 King St, hiding behind the vines , boarded up windows and rusted fence for over 50 years, was the beginning of it’s reality.

This charming old building was built in the early 1900’s as the power plant for the town of Onancock. Following the demise of steam generated power, many other entrepreneurs have set up business over the last century, including boat building and repair, car repair and use as a warehouse. Before finding new life as a garden shop in 2005, this glorious building had been used only for storage for over fifty years.

The intensive 3 month renovation during the winter of 2005, included lowering the ceiling to insulate, replacing the wood doors with glass doors, making a new doorway on the west side to enter the garden, adding heat, plumbing and electric.

The original wood doors now hang inside. 100 year old beams found in the building now are used for arbors and ledger boards to decorate the interior and are used in displays. The original brick interior was simply power washed and adds an earthy texture and fabulous backdrop to the garden inspired décor. The mix of merchandise makes the shop a delight to the eye, the design is the fun part.

You must come in often, because like the changing seasons, the shop gets a new look at least 4 times a year!

Outdoors, the garden area was resurrected from an unkempt, overgrown in-town junkyard filled with old cars and car parts, oil drums, old tires, glass, bricks, blocks, vines, weeds, 25’ volunteer trees and a falling down rusted metal garage.

Now the in-town garden sanctuary, is a little botanic surprise on King St. The many colors and textures of annuals, perennials, herbs and shrubs blend with garden statuary, birdbaths, arbors and fountains under the canopy of mature existing trees.
